Rodney Fraser Ritchie passed away on November 30, 2023, in Hanford, Ca at the age of 99. He was born on July 7, 1924, at Hanford Sanitarium to Robert Harper and Helen Mary Fraser Ritchie. Rod lived most of his life in Hanford, specifically the township of Grangeville, except for the years he lived in Calcutta, India.
In his younger years, Rodney attended Grangeville elementary, graduated Hanford High School (Class of 1942), CSUF, COS, UCSB and Thunderbird School of Global Management.
Rodney was called to serve in the Army Air Corps (now called the Air Force) World War II in 1943 and was sent to the Pacific Theater and was stationed in the Philippines, then Japan. He was a Staff Sargent and in 1946 was riding in a military jeep that was hit by a train. He spent 6 months in a body cast in the hospital then rehabilitated and was honorably discharged in 1947.
He worked for Standard Oil Company and lived in Calcutta, India as a District Sales Manager for 6 years before returning home to Grangeville. He then worked as a grammar school and high school teacher while attaining his Real Estate License. Rod also taught Real Estate courses at COS. He eventually became a Broker and opened Rod Ritchie Realty. He sold Real Estate in Kings County for over 40 years. He invested in his trade and owned rental properties throughout Hanford.
Rodney was involved in many community organizations. He was a Mason, a Rotarian, a Shriner, a HUHS School District Trustee, Kings County Board of Realtors. Kings County Navy League, American Field Service Association and The Century Travelers Club.
Rod was passionate about travel. He ventured to 7 continents, 240 countries and U.S. Possessions. He went around the world 6 times and was aboard the Queen Mary in 1952 as she traveled across the pond to England and then onward to India. His greatest trip was when he traveled the Silk Road by train from Turkey to Hong Kong in 1986. He considered travel his hobby because he did it so often. His other hobby’s included reading books, reciting poems (if you know, you know) attending functions and parties as well as tennis. He loved playing the sport of tennis, but also attended the “Major“ tournaments such as Wimbledon, The Australian, French and U.S. Opens.
Rodney leaves his son, Rob Ritchie (Stephanie) and his 2 daughters Brenda Murray (Mickey) and Cindy Kelly (Bill) ; 10 grandchildren, Reed, Rogan, Michelle, Kelly, Melissa, Marty, John, Hope, Jessica and Matt. 15 Great grandchildren and 5 Great Great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his Wife, Lucille, his brother, Robert, his daughter Diana and his companion Gloria.
A Private Graveside Service for Immediate family will be held at Grangeville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions or donations to be made to Hanford Rotary Club in Rod’s memory.
