Reynold Anthony Gaitan, affectionately known as Rey, passed away just shy of his 91st birthday. Born in Hanford, California, on March 25, 1935, to Jess and Minnie Gaitan, Rey was the fifth of six children. He attended St. Rose McCarthy School and graduated from Hanford High School in 1953.
Following graduation, Rey began a lifelong career working alongside his parents at Deluxe Tailors and Cleaners. It was at the family business that he met the love of his life and longtime partner, Yvonne Martin. Rey was a man of simple pleasures and deep dedication. He was known for his incredible work ethic. If a customer needed a suit on the same day, Rey ensured it was delivered, even if it meant a drop-off at 8:00 PM. He truly valued the people he served.
Outside of work, Rey was a soft-spoken man with a huge heart for animals. He was never without his beloved cats and dog, always ensuring they were well-fed and cared for wherever he went. On Sundays, he and Yvonne would attend church before heading to the cleaners to maintain the machines, followed by visits to family members and special outings with their nieces and nephews.
After his parents passed, Rey and Yvonne took over the family business, dedicating their lives to its success. Even in retirement, Rey’s social spirit never faded. He enjoyed visiting the veteran’s hall to play pool, and trips to the Bingo Palace. He missed his customers so dearly that he would often drive his old delivery route just to visit and reminisce about old times.
Rey was a man who made friends everywhere he went. Though his health declined in recent years, he was supported by wonderful caregivers and family. He recently celebrated his milestone 90th birthday surrounded by loved ones and was looking forward to his 91st.
Rey is preceded in death by his parents, Jess and Minnie Gaitan; his sister, Helen Lawrence; his brothers, Armand, Albert, and Art; and his partner, Yvonne Martin. He is survived by his sister, Rachael Lawrence; niece Tracey Brazil (Jim); and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Whitehurst McNamara on Tuesday, March 3, at 11:00 AM.
