Maria Luis Obituary

Maria Luis a Hanford resident for over 50 years, passed away Saturday, June 3, 2017 at home. She was 91 years old. Maria was born March 8, 1926 in São Jorge, Azores, to Manuel P. and Candida R. Bettencourt. She married Joe Luis and together they came to California and raised their family of 4 children in Hanford. Maria was a member of St. Brigid Catholic Church and attended The Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima in Laton where she sang in the Portuguese Choir. She loved to cook large meals for her family and spend as much time as she could with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Maria is survived by her husband of 60 years, Joe Luis and by her children Joe Luis & wife Syd of Visalia, Filomena Teixeira & husband Rodney, Maria Akin & husband Doug and Henry Luis & wife Debbie all of Hanford. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren; Joy Heather & husband Ryan Casey, Kolby Luis, Blake Akin & wife Tina, and Sean Akin & wife Kacey, Katelyn Monteiro & husband Darren and Kayla Luis. Also surviving are her three great grandchildren; Luke Akin, Jackson Akin and Lincoln Monteiro and soon to arrive Baby Blain Robert Casey and Baby Girl Akin.

Visitation for Maria will take place on Thursday, June 8, 2017 from 5:00-7:00 pm with a Rosary beginning at 6:00pm at Whitehurst McNamara Funeral Home, 100 W. Bush St., Hanford, CA. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, June 9, 2017 at 1:00 pm at St. Brigid Catholic Church, 1001 N. Douty St., Hanford. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. A reception will be held at the Hanford Fraternal Hall.
