Maria Alice Lopes, 86, was received by our lord and savior in Hanford on June 9, 2026 in her home surrounded by her loving family. She was a devoted mother, a loving grandma and great grandma, and a cherished friend to many.
Maria was born on January 29, 1940, in São Bartolomeu, Terceira, Azores, to the late Antonio Costa and Herminia Macedo. In 1971, she was united in marriage to her beloved husband, Francisco Lopes. Seeking new opportunities, they immigrated to the United States in 1975. Together, they lovingly raised their five children until Francisco’s sudden and unexpected passing in 1990. Faced with the daunting task of navigating life in a still-unfamiliar country, Maria became the sole provider and guiding light for her five teenage children. Through every hardship, her unwavering resilience and deep devotion never faltered as she worked tirelessly to ensure her family was always protected and provided for.
Beyond her fierce dedication as a mother, Maria possessed a vibrant spirit and a deep love for life. She brought joy to every room she entered and was happiest when surrounding herself with the people she loved. She cherished attending Portuguese celebrations, where she could always be found socializing with her many family members and friends, laughing, singing, and enjoying a classic whiskey and 7UP.
A true matriarch, Maria filled her home with warmth, love, and the comforting aromas of her cooking. Most days, she could be found in the kitchen preparing delicious, home-cooked meals and baking for her family, all while happily listening to her favorite Portuguese music. In her quieter moments, she found joy in the simple pleasures of life: crocheting beautiful pieces, solving word search puzzles, and faithfully watching The Price is Right.
Maria’s fun-loving nature and sense of adventure created countless beautiful memories, none more cherished than the birthday she spent seeing her favorite country artist, George Strait, perform live. True to her enthusiastic spirit, she could be heard joyfully shouting, “I love you, George!” all the way from the nosebleed section. Her laughter, her strength, and her unforgettable zest for life leave an enduring legacy that will be forever cherished by all who knew and loved her.
Maria’s greatest joy was her family, who will carry her memory in their hearts forever. She is survived by her loving children: Christina (Israel) Lizaola, Paul Lopes, Delia Lopes, Carla ( David Dias), and Maria (Devin Wilder) Lopes. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: Dillon Lizaola, Celene Lizaola, Zachary Lizaola, Steven Hammond, Adrianna Hammond, Jacob Dias, Allison Dias, Austin Wilder, and Avree Wilder, as well as 10 adored great-grandchildren, and a large circle of extended family and dear friends.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 25, 2026, from 8:30-9:30 am at Whitehurst-McNamara Funeral Service followed by a rosary and mass at St. Brigid’s Catholic Church-1001N. Douty St., Hanford at 10 am with graveside burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery and a reception at Grangeville Oaks-18896 Grangeville Blvd., Lemoore. All who knew and loved Maria are welcome to attend.
