Jose Maciel Obituary

Jose Jess “Joe” Maciel, born in Guadalajara, Mexico, to Epitacio Rodriguez and Victoria Maciel, passed away peacefully at his home in Hanford, California, on February 17, 2026, at the age of 80.

He moved with his family to Hanford at the age of 8. He graduated from Hanford High School in 1964. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy on July 3, 1962, and served honorably until his retirement on December 31, 1984. While stationed in San Diego, Joe earned his master’s degree in counseling. His favorite duty station was Diego Garcia.

After his military career, Joe worked many years as a counselor and ran multiple support groups, helping countless individuals through guidance and care. He also worked as a realtor, sold cemetery plots, provided career counseling at Camp Pendleton, owned laundromats in Chula Vista and when he moved to Hanford he owned and managed rental properties demonstrating his entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to serving his community.

Joe had many passions. He loved to dance, especially West Coast Swing, and was an avid and published photographer. He embraced his love for travel, exploring countries around the world and experiencing new cultures with enthusiasm and curiosity. Joe also loved going to garage sales and antiquing so much that he would flip a U-turn anywhere to return for a good sale. His passion for antiques grew so much that he eventually opened an antique store to resell many of the treasures he had collected.

Joe is survived by his life partner, Nancy Hitchcock; his stepdaughter, Skeeter Hitchcock; many nieces and nephews; many dear friends; and his beloved dance community, who will all cherish his memory. He was preceded in death by his mother, Vicky Maciel; his brother, Pete Maciel; and his son, Marc Maciel.

A graveside service will be held on March 7, 2026, at 11 a.m. at Hanford Cemetery, Hanford, California. Immediately following, there will be a celebration of life at First Lutheran Church, Hanford.

Joe’s warmth, joy, and zest for life touched everyone who knew him. He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever celebrated for the love, laughter, and memories he shared.
