Jose Chavez, Sr. Obituary

Jose R. Chavez, Sr., 75, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother passed away surrounded by his loving family on June 7, 2025.

Rudy was born on May 1, 1950 to Jose Maria Chavez, Sr. and Francisca Marina Chavez Encinas in Five Points, California. He was preceded in death by his parents and several brothers and sisters.

Rudy is survived and missed by his loving wife Rosa, of 55 years, his 4 children, Betsy (Frank), Mimi, Jose (Mayra) and Vanessa (Pat), his 11 wonderful grandchildren to whom he was affectionally known as “Tata Rudy”, Lisette (Andy), Brandon (RiAnne), Brian, Luke, Ethan (Sandy), Christopher, Matthew, Emmalynn, Arynne, Jillian, Noelia, and his 2 beautiful great-granddaughters Giannina and Xiomara. He is also survived by his two younger brothers, Jose Maria, and Raphael (Berta).

Rudy was a devout Catholic and proud parishioner and Sacristan of St. Ann’s Church in Riverdale for many years. He enjoyed spending time with his family, music, and singing. He was a talented guitar player and could often be heard singing and playing in the church choir during Sunday Mass.

Outside of his missionary work, Rudy found joy in his family and sports. He could often be found cheering and supporting his children and grandchildren’s extracurricular activities and was always present in the stands at every sporting event and special milestones. He had a special love for soccer and coached soccer for 10 years. Some of his proudest moments came during his coaching tenure for Riverdale High School as head coach for the boys varsity soccer team, where he led the team in 1995 to a D-5 Valley Championship. A special moment he was able to share on the field with his son, Jose.

Rudy was also a devoted Father to his children and great friend to many who could always be counted on when needed. He never hesitated to help his family, friends or a stranger in need and was always a phone call away.

Those who knew and loved Rudy will remember him for his infectious smile, overwhelming laughter, his deep-rooted faith and unwavering commitment to the Lord. He always spread kindness to everyone he encountered. Rudy always had an amazing story to tell, a funny joke, and words of wisdom to share. He had a special gift for making others laugh and smile leaving a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of crossing his path.

Although Rudy’s physical presence may no longer grace our lives, his spirit will continue to inspire and uplift us. May his memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved him and may we carry forth his legacy of love and compassion in all that we do.
