Ernest “Happy” Cornell Horn, Senior, 83, of Lawndale, California entered into eternal rest on March 13, 2026 in Harbor City, California, leaving behind a legacy of wit, mentorship, and excellence. He will be profoundly missed and forever loved.
Ernie was born in Boley, Oklahoma on October 23, 1942. Along with his family, Ernie moved to Hanford, California in the summer of 1948. As a senior at Hanford High School, Ernie was named “Most Athletic” student; he played fullback and was crowned Football King; he was unanimously selected to the Central Yosemite All-League basketball team and the Bullpups won the league championship; and he played catcher on the baseball team. Ernie was inducted into the Longfield Center Hall of Fame in the inaugural class of 1994.
Ernie attended College of the Sequoias where he was named an All-CCJCAA linebacker and earned an All-American honorable mention. He also attended California State University, Los Angeles and played semi-pro football for the Orange County Ramblers. Ernie was married to Constance M. Frazier from 1962-1980, and they had two children. Ernie worked for Gelson’s Markets in Commerce for 40 years—first, as a driver and later, as the headquarters distribution manager.
Everyone who knew Ernie will remember his quick wit, dashing smile, and formidable poker face. He most enjoyed spending time with his family, to whom he was a steadfast source of guidance and support. Ernie never hesitated to lend a helping hand (or couch) in times of need. He valued hard work and grit, which he attributed to his parents’ principles and guidance. Ernie always encouraged those around him to reach for the stars. He was very proud of his family and their accomplishments.
Ernie inherited a love of the outdoors and sports from his father. As a young boy, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing ball with his brothers. He relished visiting nature, especially the giant sequoias. More recently, Ernie could often be found cheering on his favorite Los Angeles sports teams, or watching his favorite old westerns, sci-fi films, or 60 Minutes.
Ernie is survived by his devoted children, Suzette and her husband Thomas Stoddard, Ernest Horn Jr. and his wife Dewaynna; four loving grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his former wife, Constance M. Frazier; brothers Clyde Horn and his wife Sharon, Lynn “Butch” Horn and his wife Rosie; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, Alex Horn Sr. and Alsie; brothers Cleveland Horn Sr., Alex Leon Horn Jr., Glen Horn; and sisters Flordie Mae Horn and Lena Horn.
The family will be having a Celebration of Life on April 25, 2026 from 11 am to 3 pm at the Episcopal Church of the Savior, 519 N. Douty Street, Hanford, CA, 93230.
