Donald D. Green

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Donald Doyle Green of Hanford, California, who left us on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, after a long and courageous battle against advanced skin cancer. He was 74 years old, and was surrounded by family and loved ones at the time of his death. 

Born on January 31, 1952 in Santa Cruz, California, Don called many places home as a child. As one of three children to a Navy father, he spent time with his family across the Pacific, including stops in Subic Bay in the Philippines and Agana Naval Base in Guam, before returning to Patterson, California in 1964. 

After graduating from Patterson High School in 1970, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Fresno State University. Soon after graduating, he enlisted in the Marine Corps. He went through Basic Training and Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Virginia, and Flight School in Florida, ultimately entering service as a commissioned officer. He was honorably discharged after 7 years of service as a Captain, and continued for several years as a Marine Corps reserve member.

After serving his country in the Marine Corps, Don eventually went to the Police Academy and joined the Hanford Police Department, eager to serve his community. He began his law enforcement career as a patrol officer, with stints as a detective and undercover narcotics officer, where his thick mustache, jokes, and mullet always came in handy. Don then went back to a patrol officer position, before finding his niche as traffic officer and motorcycle officer, where he spent the majority of his career until he retired in 2005. During his career, he formed lifelong bonds with his fellow law enforcement brothers, which was highlighted by the big turnout at his retirement party, and his Thursday morning coffee meetups with all his fellow retirees at Weinerschnitzel. Over the span of his career with the Hanford Police Department, he also spoke at career days at local elementary schools and served as president of the Hanford Police Officer’s Association, highlighting his involvement beyond simply performing his duties as an officer. 

Don met his wife, Julie, on a routine visit to court as an officer, where Julie worked as a certified court reporter. He has told his children the story of their first date multiple times, where they went to Vintage Press in Visalia for dinner and dessert, and then dancing in Armona. He would always tell us with a smile that he had to go to the ATM between dinner and dancing because he didn’t have enough money - but to him, that woman in the bright green jumpsuit was worth every penny. They were married on May 19, 1984, and spent over 40 years together raising three children and creating cherished memories together. 

After retiring from the Hanford Police Department with 22 years of service, it became clear, especially to those who knew him well, that he was not quite ready to settle down. He soon pursued new ventures - he spent time as a criminology teacher at College of the Sequoias for a number of years, refereed high school volleyball, and became the head chef at home. This jack-of-all-trades mentality was something unique to Don, and something that could be illustrated not just in his work, but his spare time as well. 

Don was an avid golfer, a sport he was passionate about for nearly 30 years. In addition to being a longtime member at Kings Country Club (where he routinely played 5-6 times per week) for several decades, he also competed in several iterations of the California, Western States, and World Police and Fire Games, which took him and his family to places such as Melbourne, Australia, Calgary, Canada, and Memphis, Tennessee. His golf skill was evident in his reception of multiple bronze, silver, and gold medals in these competitions. He could also claim three holes-in-one to his name, a feat many never achieve once in their lifetime. Don loved spending time out on the course with his friends, son, Steven, and family during the annual Green family reunion golf outings. Everybody that shared the course with him knew they could count on a tight draw off the tee box and a skilled short game. For a brief period, he even brought his service acumen to the country club, where he served as Board President for a few years. For many, loving golf will be a core memory that they hold of Don. 

In addition to golf, he loved to stay active at the house doing lawn and gardening work, cooking, and building and fixing things around the house. He was always working on projects around the house, and was a great “DIY-er” - just pray you did not have to hold a tool or flashlight for him, or you would be in the line of fire! 

He was also an avid sports fan - from cheering on his kids at their respective sporting events (you could always hear him, sometimes too much!), being a long-time season ticket holder for the Fresno State football team, to watching his beloved San Francisco 49ers or Golden State Warriors, he was the ultimate sports guy. Beyond sports, he was also the ultimate martini and wine connoisseur - he could usually be found with a dry vodka martini in hand - always two olives - or a good glass of red wine. A good night at the house to Don meant a great family meal and opening a nice bottle of wine, or trying a new vodka for his martinis that he had received for as a birthday or Christmas present. He was a man of many likes and talents, and summing it up in words seems to always fall short. 

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Rodney and Maxine Green, sister Jenny Green, mother-in-law Alleen Haydock, brother-in-law Ronnie Haydock, and sister-in-law Naomi Haydock. 

He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years Julie Green; children Wendi Rocha (Robert), Steven Green (Shaley), and Kristen Wilson (Ryan); grandchildren Kaylie Rocha, Megan Rocha, Ryan Rocha, Carter Green, Bryson Wilson, and Deegan Wilson; brother Ron Green (Bonnie), brothers-in-law Larry Haydock and Mike Haydock, sister-in-law Darlene Haydock, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. 

Don will be remembered as a jokester, a self-proclaimed comedian, and the life of the party. He was always the first to tell a story or entertain a conversation. He’ll be remembered as a huge Christmas lights decorator on Westport Drive and for dressing up as Santa for the kids as the lines of endless cars came to visit the lit-up cul de sac. He will be remembered for front-flipping into the pool during the Green Family annual reunions to kick-off the pool volleyball tournament. Truthfully, he will be remembered for a lot of things. But most importantly, he will be remembered as a husband, a father, a brother, and as a friend. Those were his best attributes. 

We hope friends, family, and those who were close to him can join us in a celebration of life honoring Don on August 7, 2026, from 3:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at Kings Country Club, located at 3529 12th Avenue, Hanford, CA 93230. Light hors d’oeuvres and drinks will be served.
