Clement John McNamara a longtime resident of Hanford passed away on Sunday, July 5, 2009 at the age of 78.
Born in Richmond, California in 1931, he was one of seven children. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Helen McNamara, brothers Joseph, Charles, and William McNamara.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Elsie McNamara; his daughter, Kathleen, and her husband Michael Owens, of Paso Robles; his son, Timothy and his wife Rachel McNamara of Hanford; and his youngest son, Patrick McNamara of Hanford. He is also survived by his grandsons Edmond Owens, Joshua McNamara and Michael Martinez. His three sisters, Ann Williams of Mariposa, Rita Cavanaro of Visalia, and Carole Whiteside of Hanford also survive him. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Clement moved to Hanford when he was 7 years old after his father, Charles passed away in Berkeley, California. His mother, Helen, relocated the entire family to Hanford where she worked as a telephone operator. Clement attended Woodrow Wilson Junior High School, and Hanford High School. After High School, he enlisted in the Navy and served on the USS Virgo. After he was honorably discharged from the Navy, he returned to Hanford, where he worked with a friend on a pick-up route for a laundry and cleaning service. This is where he met his future employer Robert L. Sullivan who offered him a job with Sullivan-Odell Funeral Home. From then on he was part of the firm. In the 1960's Clement went back to school and earned his Mortuary Science degree from the San Francisco College of Mortuary and Science. He also earned his Funeral Director's license in 1967. Soon after he purchased the funeral home business which is now Whitehurst-McNamara Funeral Service. Clem worked there for over 50 years. Clement McNamara served hundreds of families during his career, and he always felt it an honor that the families trusted him during their most difficult challenges. Clem was an active community partner , he loved Hanford and the people who lived here. Throughout his life he worked with several organizations to promote the city and it's hometown atmosphere. He sponsored a Little League baseball team, served his beloved St. Brigid Catholic church, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus 4th degree, the Elks Lodge No. 1259, Military Order of the Louse, past member of the Breakfast Lion's club, Historical Society, Angels on Wheels, Kings County Cabrillo Club, the Hanford Fraternal Organization, and worked on the Fort Roosevelt Project.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, July 9 with the Recitation of the Rosary at 7 p.m. at St. Brigid Catholic Church. Mass will be at 9 a.m., Friday at St. Brigid Church, burial with military honors will follow at the Calvary Cemetery in Hanford.
Arrangements are under the direction of Whitehurst-McNamara Funeral Services Chapel in Hanford.
