Alice Theresa Guecho-Azevedo (Netto) was born in Tulare on October 18, 1928, to parents Alice Netto (Martin) and Tony Netto (Catano). She was followed shortly by her brother Tony Netto, who became her lifelong best friend. Born during the Depression, Alice learned early on what was important in life and what wasn’t, finding joy in the simple things. Her favorite pastime growing up was playing with her brother and cousins on the dairy.
In 1943, Alice met the love of her life at a Portuguese Fiesta. Joe S. Guecho, Jr. was tall, funny, and loved to dance. She quickly fell in love with him. On July 17, 1944, the two wed in Tulare and made their home in Hanford, living on a homestead with Joe's parents and sisters. Alice embraced her life as a homemaker, mother, and farmer's wife. During their 54 years of marriage, the two shared six sons, Joaquin, Joey, Ron (John), Frank, Richard, and Michael, and ran a dairy business for over four decades. Some may have called her life simple, but for her, it was her purpose. She loved raising her sons, traveling with her husband and their siblings, and growing old together. When Joe died in 1997, Alice was by his side.
Most are only lucky to find love once in their lifetime, but Alice was fortunate to find it twice. In 2000, Alice met Joe Azevedo. The two wed in 2001, leaving behind her country life to move into town for the first time in her life. The two enjoyed going out with friends, traveling to the Azores, and the occasional fiesta. Their companionship and love continued for 20 years until Joe died in 2021.
Alice loved to cook and bake. Her home was always the host of holidays and get-togethers. She loved having family over. Shopping was her therapy. In her opinion, there is nothing a new dress and shoes would not cure, nor a weekly trip to the hair salon. Rarely did you see her out without her lipstick, cute purse, and hair done. She loved to travel all over, but Pismo Beach was one of her favorite places. But her most precious treasures were her grandbabies. She loved to babysit and play with them, and a few she raised as her own.
Alice was surrounded by those who loved her most in the last years of her life. She died peacefully on March 17, 2024, at the age of 95. At the time of her death, Alice had 16 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 20 great-great-grandchildren. Her legacy will live on.
Alice is survived by her two sons, Ron (John) and Richard Guecho, both of Hanford. She is preceded in death by her husbands, Joe Guecho and Joe Azevedo; her parents, Alice Nunes (Netto) and Tony Netto; and stepfather Manuel Nunes; brother and sister-in-law Tony and Marsha Netto; sons Joaquin, Joey, Frank, and Michael; daughter-in-law Maria Guecho; grandson Trenton Davis-Guecho; granddaughter Teresa Phillips; and great-grandson Maddox Toste.
